Consider the practice of sealing juvenile records. Should juvenile records be sealed or should they be readily available to those who work in criminal justice?

What will be an ideal response?

(Question #2) Restitution requires that the juvenile offender repay the __________ for his delinquent conduct.

Fill in the blank(s) with correct word

(Question #3) What physical properties are used most often to characterize glass particles? What is the main drawback of using these properties to characterize glass?

What will be an ideal response?

(Question #4) Describe how a forensic scientist determines the refractive indices of suspect glass fragments.

What will be an ideal response?

1)   Answers should weigh the benefits of protecting the privacy of juveniles against the benefit to law enforcement in knowing if a person has been previously arrested (even while still a minor).

2)  victim

3)  The physical properties of density and refractive index are used most successfully for characterizing glass particles. The main drawback of using these properties to characterize glass is that they are class characteristics and as such will not provide the sole criteria for individualizing glass to a common source.

4)  To determine the refractive indices of suspect glass fragments, forensic scientists use a process called immersion, in which glass particles are immersed in a liquid medium whose refractive index is adjusted by varying its temperature until it equals that of the glass particles. At this point, known as the match point, the observer notes the glass will seem to disappear from view or will be at minimum contrast with the liquid it is immersed in. Also, the observer will note the disappearance of the Becke line at the match point.
