(Answer to #2)  In litigation, everything revolves around dates and deadlines. This is particularly true in the federal system where deadlines exist for everything from serving an answer to completing discovery and beginning trial. These dates are set very early in the litigation and the legal team must adhere to them or suffer the consequences of the wrath of the trial judge. There is little excuse for missing a deadline, and it is malpractice to do so.

In litigation, it is the source of information intended to be presented at trial. If stored on a network file server, it can be readily searched and accessed using a laptop in the courtroom.
