Perhaps the greatest early influence on Dutch floriculture was horticulture scientist Charles de
l'Ecluse, known as Clusius (1526-1609). Some of his work involved research on the phenomenon of
breaking of tulips where certain flowers held wildly unique colors and patterns resembling flames
and feathering. This phenomenon, later found in the 19th century to have been caused by viruses and
not by genetic means, lead to the Tulip Mania of the 1630s during the Dutch Golden Age. Wealthy
merchants paid exorbitant prices for tulip bulbs. Some historians point to this period out as one of the
first known economic bubbles, a trade of products with inflated values that, after a period of time,
quickly deflate in value.
