Content standards list the particular behaviors that a student will be held accountable for. Performance standards are the qualitative levels or categories to which students' responses will be assigned. The cells of the table describe in clear language the particular behaviors that merit particular performance ratings. Use of scoring rubrics is desirable for three reasons: (a) they increase the objectivity, consistency, and efficiency of scoring; (b) they make it easier for teachers to match the content of instructional lessons to the demands of the test; and (c) they help students monitor their progress and make useful corrections in their learning activities. Performance tests involve the use of a wide range of knowledge and skills over an extended period of time to complete a task or solve a problem under more or less realistic conditions. This kind of evaluation is important because it allows the teacher to observe the amount of school learning that has transferred to real-life applications. They measure what the student can do with what he or she has learned. Direct writing assignments, portfolio exhibitions, and demonstrations are all types of performance tests. The advantages of using essay tests are that they reveal how well students can recall, organize, and clearly communicate information. They encourage students to learn material meaningfully. When they are well written, essay tests require examinees to function at the higher cognitive levels. However, essay tests are difficult to grade consistently and grading can be time consuming. They are also time consuming to respond to, which limits the amount of the instructional domain that can be tested. The advantages of using short-answer tests are that they are easy to write, students can respond to many items in a short span of time, and the student is required to recall, rather than recognize, the correct response. There are several disadvantages to using short-answer tests. First, answering this type of question does not require the student to use higher levels of cognitive processing. Second, this type of test provides no information about how well students can use the knowledge they have acquired. Third, these tests can be difficult to score.
