What is wrong with this Lewis dot structure for the CO2 molecule?


a) It should have the single bond replaced with a double bond, and two lone pairs on the oxygen atom at that end.

b) It should have the triple bond replaced with a double bond, and two lone pairs on the oxygen atom at that end.

c) It should have both bonds replaced with double bonds, and two lone pairs on each oxygen atom.

d) It should have both bonds replaced with single bonds, and three lone pairs on each oxygen atom.

I chose c) It should have both bonds replaced with double bonds, and two lone pairs on each oxygen atom. Is that correct and if not, how do figure out which answer is correct? The image is attached below.

Hi bio_man,

That makes more sense now!

So it would be c) It should have both bonds replaced with double bonds, and two lone pairs on each oxygen atom. because after correctly drawing the  CO2 molecule, there are two double bonds (one on each side of the carbon atom) indicating shared bonds and there are two lone pairs on each atom. That seems to be the right answer unless I am missing something.
