There are 500 mice in a population. Over the course of a year, 125 offspring are born, and 25 individuals die.  What is the per capita rate of increase in this population?
Hint: r (per capita rate of increase) =  b - d

Solution: Birth of individuals (B) = 125

Death of individuals(D) = 25

Number of population,(N) = 500

Birth rate, b = B/N = 125/500 = 0.25

Death rate, d = D/N = 25/500 = 0.05

per capita rate of increase, r = b - d

r = 0.25 - 0.05

r = 0.20

Ans: Per capita rate of increase in this population is 0. 20
