Post by: lewis on Apr 19, 2012 Fungi reproduce both sexually and asexually; the precise mechanism of reproduction depends on the form of the fungus. Yeasts usually bud asexually in a manner similar to that of prokaryotic reproduction. Filamentous fungi can reproduce by the use of a variety of asexual spores, such as sporangiospores, chlamydospores, or conidiospores, based on the type of fungus. Filamentous fungi can also produce sexual spores that are the product of cellular fusion and meiosis and that create genetic variation in a population. Because of the diversity observed among fungi in this area, they are often classified according to the nature and morphology of their reproductive structures and spores.
