Post by: bio_man on Mar 1, 2015 A peer group is a group of people usually of the same age, background and social status with whom an individual associates and this group of people is very likely to influence the person’s beliefs and behaviour. An example of a peer group is 18 year olds associating with other 18 year olds, this group of 18 year olds would not usually associate with anyone younger. And another example is, teacher- teachers do not share the same peer group as students.
They’re small groups and are usually defined by common interests and friendship. They number of people in the group ranges from 2-12 all of which tend to be formed via same age, gender, race and social class. Cliques can act as a way to maintain socialization and social control. The positives of being a part of a clique are that they provide a sense of belonging, security and over all well-being. Members of a clique are on the same terms in regards to academics and risks behaviors. |
