His theory is one of the only theories on personality development that encompasses the entire lifespan. The idea is that successful resolution of the crisis at each stage lays the groundwork for the successful resolution of the next stage. The stage are basic trust vs. mistrust, autonomy vs. shame and doubt, initiative vs. guilt, industry vs. inferiority, identity vs. role confusion, intimacy vs. isolation, generativity vs. stagnation, and ego integrity vs. despair.
