Title: Electrical Engineering Question?
Post by: dartz1221 on Aug 9, 2012
For a given linear circuit, the output voltage is 5V when an input voltage of 20V is applied to the circuit. What is the output voltage if 16V is applied to the circuit?

A. 20V
B. 4V
C. Must use Kirchhoff's laws to determine.
D. 8V

The key here is that it's a linear circuit, meaning Vo=Vi*k (k is a constant).

k = Vo1/Vi1 = 5/20 = 1/4

k = Vo2/Vi2 = 1/4

Vi2 = 16V

Therefore, Vo2 = 16*(1/4) = 4V

Answer is B

Let us construct a counter example.  Consider a circuit consisting of a resistor connected from the input to ground and a 5 V battery connected from the output to ground and no other components.  Obviously, the output is 5 V for all inputs.  Therefore the answer is C.

B since it is telling you the ckt is linear. basically it has a gain of 1/4. so Vout/Vin = 1/4   5/20 = 1/4 1  VOUT = GAIN * INPUT = 1/4*16 = 4

Just going by your information:

20/5  =  16/x
x  = 8 volts

This is the answer unless there is something else in this linear circuit.
