Why are negative feedback loops more effective at maintaining homeostasis than positive feedback loops?

Negative loops counteract a stimulus to return the body to homeostatic levels. For example, when an animal's body temperature increases, blood vessels dilate and sweat is produced to help lower the temperature back to normal. Positive loops respond to a stimulus by moving the body further from the homeostatic normal.
