Post by: Rkamu on Sep 5, 2012
i want to calculate the correct size cable to use that runs from my main power supply to the electrical motor now the only information i have is the kW and allowable load and amps on the motor and the main supply voltage  and the length the cable must travel is it possible to do such a calculation

Edit your question to include the motor amps, the voltage, single or 3-phase, and distance from motor to main power supply, and I or someone else will calculate the wire size for you.

Multiply the motor full load current by 1.25 and find the current allowed. You can get the equivalent cable size in the NEC tables. This is assuming the motor is within 30 feet from the magnetic contactor.
