Title: What does it mean to solve an equation by factoring?
Post by: oaqadir on Sep 7, 2012
Alright so basically, in my math homework it says "find the factors" and I did that, UNTIL a new section of my homework says"Solve the equation by factoring"

The teacher said to do something else AFTER I factor but I forget!

For example

x^2-6x-7=0 is obviously (x+1)(x-7)

And

x^2+x=6 is (x+3) (x-2)

Soo... What do I do?! I found the factors but what do I have to do when it says "Solve the equation by factoring?" PLEASE EXPLAIN!

THANK YOU!

x ² - 6x - 7 = 0
( x + 1 ) ( x - 7 ) = 0
x = - 1 , x = 7

x ² + x - 6 = 0
( x - 3 ) ( x + 2 ) = 0
x = 3 , x = - 2
