DNA is the information-bearing molecule within cells.  It is a large heteropolymer.  Information is encoded in the sequence of the four monomer residues of adenine, guanine, cytosine, and thymine.  The ordering of these "bases" determines the sequence of the polypeptide "gene product," with three bases, in the correct reading frame, specifying an amino acid residue to be attached to the polypeptide chain.
