Starts the digestion of proteins in the stomach prior to complete digestion in the small intestine.

Pepsin is an enzyme which breaks down protein.
Its essential as it breaks down protein to amino acids which are the building blocks and can be used to make other things in your body like hormones, other enzymes etc.
