George Hay thought passions should be freely expressed and Thomas Jefferson supported Hay, arguing that "error of opinion may be tolerated where reason is left free to combat it."  But when people became passionate about an issue, do they remain open to reason or did they become closed-minded?  What happened in the 1790s?  Why were the Alien and Sedition Acts passed?
