Title: How do you write the nomenclature for polyatomic ions?
Post by: livoniabulldo on Sep 8, 2012
Example; say Aluminum Sulphate. How come the formula isn't Al2SO3 (if 2 and 3 are subscripts) Is there an easy method of remembering how to do this easily?

sulfate is SO4^2-
aluminum is Al3+
You have to switch the charges and since that results in sulfate being multiplied by 3, you have to put the entire polyatomic ion in parenthesis.
Al2(SO4)3
