Monoatomic are single elements. Mono- the prefix means one.
Polyatomic are chemicals usually found on the back of periodic tables such as: NitrATE CarbonATE NitrITE.

When an atom loose electrons or gains electrons it become a mono atomic ion. But in some cases the central atom of an atom group lose or gains electrons this will results poly atomic ions( we call it as radicals)

MONO ATOMIC ION S;;------the ion which has only one atom e. g.
  Cl-1  ,  O--2 ,  Al+3  ,  Fe+3  , Mn+2 Co+2  ,, Ni+2
BUT  POLYATOMIC  IONS;;---- the ion which has  more than one atom   e,. g.
   CO3-2  ,  PO4-3. MnO4-1   , MnO4-2 .,SO4-2 , C2O4_2 ,,CH3COO-1

when an ion contains only  one atom the ion is mono[means one] atomic as H+,02-,Fe2+,Na1+ etc
when an ion have more than one[2,3,4 etc] atoms it is polyatomic as,OH- as it contains one O atom and one H atom with a total of 2 atoms.
NO3- Has a total =1+3=4atoms hence it is also a polyatomic[tetra atomic] ion.
CH3COO-[acetate] is an another poly[hepta=7]atomic ion.
