During crossing over in prophase I of meiosis, homologous chromosomes link together and form a tetrad, and exchange DNA. If two genes are close together on a chromosome, it is likely that they will stay with each other during the crossing over process; this is called gene linkage. If two genes are not close together, it is likely they will independently assort.
