Post by: magnas on Apr 23, 2016 Information that already exists somewhere having been collected for another purpose is called secondary data. As a start researchers gather secondary data by looking into the company's internal database. Next, the company can tap into external information sources, including commercial data services and government sources. ABI/INFORM and Lexis/Nexis are two commonly used databases.
See Table 4.1 for selected external information sources. Primary data is information collected for the specific purpose at hand. Table 4.2 shows the various decisions researchers make in terms of choice of research approach, contact methods, sampling plan, and research instruments. The three major research approaches are: observation, surveys, and experiments. Contact methods include: mail, telephone, personal and online interviews.
