Title: How does this power rule work in a math equation?
Post by: rjavier1 on Sep 24, 2012
Right now i am on the last step of solving an equation it is:

t^1/3 = 1

Now i understand if it is a t^2, it would be like square rooting the other side, but how does it work when you are doing the inverse of squaring to a fraction, for this example  one-third.?

you amplify everything by 3 so it will be (t^1/3)^3=1^3 so t (1/3*3)=1 hence t^1=1 so t=1

t^1/3*t^1/3=t^2/3
t^2/3*t^1/3=t^1
t*t*t=1

The inverse of powering to a fraction is powering to the inverse of the fraction.
In this case that is the third power
(t^(1/3)^3 = 1^3
t = 1^3 = 1
