1. Carbon can be progressively be oxidized in a series of organice reactions. Determine the oxidation number of carbon in each of the following compounds in the following series of oxidation.
-Ethane
-Ethanol
-Ethanal
-Ethanoic Acid
-Carbon Dioxide

2. Acidified potassium dichromate is a common inorganic chemical reagent, most commonly used as an oxidizing agent in various laboratory and industrial applications. In on process, acidified potassium dichromate oxidizes ethanol to ethanol acid.

A)Develop a balanced half-equation reaction for the oxidation of ethanol to ethanoic acid
B) Develop a balanced half-equation reaction for reduction of chromium in dichromate ion CR2O7
C)Combine the half reactions to make the ionic equation for the overall reaction?

1. Carbon Dioxide: +4
Ethane: –3
Ethanol: –2
Ethanal: +1
Ethanoic Acid: –3

2. (a) CH3CH2OH + H2O --> CH3COOH + 4H+ + 4e-
Basically: CH3CH2OH --> CH3COOH
(b) 2Cr(3+) + 7H2O --> 14H+ + 6e- + Cr2O7(2-)
