The oxides of carbon, sulfur, and nitrogen can be harmful when released into the atmosphere. Why are these oxides so harmful? Give one reason that applies to all these oxides.

As you probably know, carbon monoxide is an colorless, odorless gas that can kill you in large concentrations. This is because the CO competes with oxygen for the binding sites on the hemoglobin molecule. Although this may not apply to other such gaseous oxides, I think such gases are harmful because they resemble oxygen and are therefore harmful to animals. Molecules such as SO2 and CO2 are also harmful becuase they become acidic in water, becoming a pollutant and irritant sometimes.
