Title: Differentiate between anabolism and catabolism.? Post by: fire_crystal on Sep 27, 2012 Metabolism is the chemical reactions that is found in the body that keeps you living. The major difference between anabolism and catabolism is that anabolism synthesizes small molecules into a complex compound while catabolism acts the other way around, it breaks complex compound into smaller molecules. Title: Differentiate between anabolism and catabolism.? Post by: Midnightcharm on Sep 27, 2012 Anabolism = building up, e.g. synthesis of new cellular components, such as synthesis of new proteins. There is a cost for anabolism--the currency used to "finance" anabolic processes is ATP.
Catabolism = breaking down, e.g. breaking large fuel molecules into smaller components, and in the process generating ATP. You can also catabolize body constituents in order to obtain energy, this is what happens during starvation--the body needs ATP, and there's no fuel coming in from the diet, so it starts breaking itself down in order to get the energy it needs. |
