Title: Functions of parts of the brain?
Post by: illicitf8 on Oct 17, 2012
Could someone please help me by telling me the function of the corpus callosum, the hypothalamus, the reticular activating system, the amygdala, and the hippocampus. even one is enough you dont have to answer all of them. thank you

corpus callosum-connecting the two cerebral hemispheres and it disseminates the information from one side of the cerebral cortex to the other side of the cerebral cortex.
hypothalamus-homeostasis, emotion, thirst, hunger, circadian rhythms, and control of the autonomic nervous system. In addition, it controls the pituitary.
reticular activating system-cardiac rythms, circadian rythms, controlling respiration.
amygdala-memory, fear, emotion
hippocampus-learning and memory. recognising spatial relationship with the world around us.

The corpus callosum allows information to be shared between the two hemispheres. It plays a crucial role in the transfer of at least some kinds of information from one hemisphere to another.

The main function of the hypothalamus is homeostasis, or maintaining the body's status quo. Factors such as blood pressure, body temperature, fluid and electrolyte balance, and body weight are held to a precise value called the set-point. It is the hub for  automatic and endocrine homeostatic systems such as cardiovascular, temperature, and abdominal visceral regulation. It manages all endocrine hormonal levels, sensory processing, and organizing body metabolism, as well as ingestive behaviors.

The ascending fibres of the reticular formation form a network called the reticular activating system, which influence wakefulness, in other word involved with the Sleep/Wake Cycle.overall degree of arousal and consciousness. Visual and acoustical stimuli and mental activities can stimulate the Reticular Activating System to maintain attention and alertness. Stimuli such as a ringing alarm clock, sudden bright lights, or cold water being splashed on the Face can arouse consciousness.

The function of amygdala involved with arousal, controls Autonomic Responses Associated with Fear, emotional Responses and hormonal Secretions.

The function of hyppocampus is involved with consolidation of new memories, emotions, navigation and spatial orientation.
