It is a fight between gravity pulling inward and heat of fusion pushing outward. During the time the star is a main sequence star, those forces are in equilibrium, so it doesn't collapse nor does it blow up.

Theres a force created by a pressure gradient. The core of the sun is hot and dense (high pressure). The surface is cooler and not so dense (low pressure). The pressure difference creates a force that opposes gravity.

There are other forces in play like radiation pressure gradients and stuff like that.
