What is a population? What is a species? Why are scholars of evolution more interested in population genetics than in how inheritance works within individual families?

simple, because evolution works at the population level, not the individual level. if you want to know about individual inheritance, talk to a geneticist, not an evolutionary biologist.

population: group of creatures
species: group of creatures capable of reproducing fertile offspring.
