Title: what must occur before a disaccharide can be absorbed into the bloodstream for use by our cells? Post by: datoledo88 on Nov 4, 2012 What type of reaction is this?
What molecule is added during this reaction? Title: what must occur before a disaccharide can be absorbed into the bloodstream for use by our cells? Post by: Smntnl on Nov 4, 2012 it is indeed a hydrolysis ( cleavage by water , so a water molecule is added across the bond )whereby the ether linkage between the two monosaccharides that joined them together in the disaccharide is cleaved . Enzymes called disaccharidases ( i.e., sucrase, maltase, lactase ) located in the microvilli ( the hair-like projections on the villi of the intestine ) are hydrolases that have specificity for the various disaccharides. The resultant monosaccharides are absorbed by active transport and/or facilitated diffusion processes into the bloodstream.
