Title: a small population of deer is introduced to an island?
Post by: dasmartypants3 on Nov 8, 2012
All of the deer are mature males and females of approximately 4 years of age.  All the males have 11-13 points on their antlers.  After several generations, if most 4-year old males have antlers with 20 points, this is the result of
A.  directional selection
B.  disruptive selection
C.  founder effect
D.  bottleneck effect
E.  stabilizing selection

Disruptive selection, starting off with a homogenous population, they eventually breed out into distinctive subgroups. on an island this may be because the limited resources means they have to specialize and find niches. The first step in speciation, and one of the reasons islands have the highest species densities

Disruptive selection, also called diversifying selection, is a descriptive term used to describe changes in population genetics when selection favors the extreme trait values over the intermediate trait values. In this case the variance increases as the population is divided into two distinct groups. Disruptive selection plays an important role in speciation.
