Haber (and Bosch) worked for a long time to perfect the process, getting just the right combination of conditions and catalyst.   Why do you think you can second-guess him?  Of course, new and improved catalysts that weren't available in his day, might improve the yield per pass, but the catalyst that is used today is the one that an associate of Bosch developed back in 1909.
