A guitar-like stringed instrument has a string that is 16 cm long.  It sounds the musical note A (440 Hz) when played without fingering. By what distance should you shorten it to play the note C (523 Hz)?
A) 2.5 cm

The frequency of the guitar = nv/2L

Here L is the length that is vibrating string

Take n=1 ,for fundamental case

In first case Full length vibrates
Therefore L=20 cm = 0.2 m
Therefore frequency 440=v/2*0.2
Therefore v=176 m/sec

In second case let the length of the vibrating string=l

523=176/2l
therefore l =0.168 m

Therefore the finger should be placed at a distance 16.8 cm from one end of the string
