Title: What's the difference between Angular Velocity and Linear Velocity?
Post by: rndraon on Nov 14, 2012
Hey guys, I am confused about the difference between angular velocity (?= ?/t) and linear velocity (V=S/t) in circular motion. I also dont get why we need linear here when we already have a circular one...

Thanks so much for your time!

To know angular velocity you must know angular displacement first.angular displacement is the angle swept out by the particle in circular motion with the central axis and the variation of angular displacement with time is angular velocity.but linear velocity does not require any angle rather its the distance travelled by the particle in unit time.in simple words the distance travelled by the particle on the circular track.we can relate them as v=rw.where w is the angular velocity.

You see it's very simple.
Linear velocity is the velocity of the body when it travels in straight path or line. It's generally denoted by v.
Now when a particle travels in a curved path , it has two velocities - 1)the instantaneous linear velocity at a point in the direction of the tangent to the point . 2 ) Angular velocity which is the velocity with which the particle travels in the curved path.It is generally denoted by omega.
Now this curved path must have a radius of curvature , let's say R. Now the linear velocity and the angular velocity of the particle are related as;
v = (omega) * R .

Hope this helped. :)
