1 -- Surgical pain, such as after gallbladder removal, is considered acute pain because it should have a duration of less than six months. The neuropathic pain associated with amputation, phantom limb pain, may not begin immediately and may become a chronic problem lasting more than six months. Complex regional pain syndrome is a chronic exaggerated response to a painful stimulus. Degenerative joint disease is chronic and while may not progress, does not usually improve.
