Title: can i use an audio car amp as a power source?
Post by: tony51092 on Jan 1, 2013
Me and my friend have this idea..  and we figured we need to get about 800 watts of power.   I know about audio amps, and they make 800 watt audio amps, but is there anyway to use that amp as a power source?

Why? to generate that 800 watts of audio power, you are using perhaps 1200 watts from the battery.
and you might get 500 watts out of it, so using 1200 watts to get 500 watts is not very useful.

Well yes, but it's a crazy thing to do. Unless you need to run a 400Hz motor or something you got from navy surplus - you'd have to use a 400Hz tone generator as input. If you want 110V AC, buy an inverter - you'll get more power more efficiently for less money.
