.A patient is demonstrating signs of thrombophlebitis. With this disorder, the nurse realizes that which three mechanisms occur to cause this condition?
Standard Text: Select all that apply.
1. pooling of blood in the vessel
2. blood hypercoagulation
3. sluggish blood flow
4. elevated systemic blood pressure
5. vessel damage

2, 3 and 5

Once you know the background of the disease you know the process. Thromobhlebitis is an inflammation of the vein from a clot. (These clots are most commonly found in the calf (Hommans sign) and possibly will relate to the heart. coagulation is for blood blooding and this is increased in an abnormal blood clot. Due to the clot (whether in a stagnant area or flying around in the body), there is a lowered blood flow with the clot in the vein so that also means there would be vessel damage (5).

Theres usually no hypertension with this disease process (4) and option one is wrong since there although there is constriction of blood flow, there is no pooling.

Three pathologic factors, called Virchow’s triad, are associated with thrombophlebitis: stasis of blood, vessel damage, and increased blood coagulability. Blood does not pool in the vessel, it is restricted. Systemic blood pressure elevation is not a mechanism of this problem.
