Title: Astronomy Question
Post by: Hobgoblin32 on Mar 24, 2013
If the distance between the Sun and Earth is 150,000,000km and the Sun has a diameter of about 1,400,000 km, determine a scale factor in terms of km/solar diameter, and then determine the Earth-Sun distance in terms of solar diameters.

1 solar diameter is 6.96 x 10^8 meters.

Therefore:

1st:

150,000,000 convert to meters by multiplying by 1000: 150,000,000,000...

2nd:

Set up a ratio:

1 solar diameter = 6.96 x 10^8 m

.........x............ = 150,000,000,000

Cross multiply: 150,000,000,000 / 6.96 x 10^8 m = 215.517.

Hope that helps.

Thanks! There's also a second part to this that I forgot to post. when you get this scale factor measure how many suns will fit between the position of the sun and jupiter (assuming that the distance between the sun and Jupiter is 5.2 AU and the suns diameter is still 1,400,000 km.) What would I do in this case? very lost.

Thank you! But one last question. I'm confused as to how the 215.517 relates to the 2nd part of the question (sun-jupiter part). Was 215.517 the final answer for the first question?

and then determine the Earth-Sun distance in terms of solar diameters.

Yes, that first post related to this ^^ Sorry about the confusion.
