Jeb lives on a small island.  Many of the people who live on the island take the bridge into the main city to work.  Although there are some jobs on the island, they are mostly at fast-food restaurants and gas stations.  Over the last year or so, Jeb has developed an intense fear of crossing the bridge.  When he does cross it, he needs to be with someone he knows in order to feel safe.  The problem is that Jeb has been offered, and had to turn down, at least three promotions at work all because it would require him to cross the bridge on a daily basis.  Jeb's family is frustrated because they could really use the money that comes with the promotions.  Jeb likely has
