Title: what does NH4Cl do to OH attached to cyclohexane?
Post by: daromero on May 3, 2013
theres more to it but basically it's an OH group attached to a cyclohexane. Would it dehydrate it, causing a double bond? according to my professor it does absolutely nothing but he's an idiot and therefore I doubt him.

I don't think so... OH is a very poor leaving group unless you protonate it first.

However, it's been nearly 3 months since I've looked at any O-chem, so don't trust me. :)

ADD- Wait, what are the rxn conditions? You might be able to do a catalyzed dehydration if you had the right solvent.
