• The danger is that a researcher may quote statistics in great detail to give an impression of scientific rigour; however, this can lead to the fallacy of misplaced concreteness, which happens when someone gives a false impression of precision by quoting statistics in greater detail than is actually necessary (“overloading” the details). For example, existing statistics report the population of Canada as 34 443 466 but it is better to say that it is approximately 34 million. |
