For what reasons do we consider the planets of the solar system to be of two fundamentally different types?

The jovian planets are made up mainly of the light elements, hydrogen and helium, while the terrestrial planets are made up mostly of heavier elements.  The jovian planets are much larger, with faster rotations, and more moons than the terrestrial planets.  These differences and others have lead to a division of the planets into two main types.
