The formation of soil begins when the parent material is exposed to the effects of the atmosphere, hydrosphere, and biosphere. Parent material can be lava or volcanic ash; rock or sediment deposited by glaciers; wind-blown dunes; sediments deposited by rivers, in lakes, or in the ocean; or, perhaps most commonly, any type of bedrock, the continuous mass of solid rock that makes up Earth's crust.
