Why are clans usually represented by symbols such as totem poles?

  a. Because they use the same surnames, they use symbols as a way of marking territory in common.
 b. Because they lack residential unity, they use symbols for common identification.
 c. Because they are often groups that speak different languages and have different customs, this is their point of common identity.
  d. They use symbols as a way of creating cultural status that has symmetry with natural class divisions.
