* The intrapsychic stage is the first stage, which occurs when an individual engages in

an internal evaluation of the partner and the relationship. During this stage we decide whether or not remaining in the relationship is worth it to us, depending in part on the costs and rewards associated with the relationship, according to the social exchange theory. We might also leak our thoughts and feelings to the other person in the way we behave, such as becoming more hostile. We may confide in a third party about our dissatisfaction.

 * During the dyadic phase we will discuss termination of the relationship with our partner. If our partner feels challenged and intimidated by our desire to end the relationship, we might have to justify our thoughts and feelings. Our partner might criticize our behaviour and identify our failings. He or she might raise issues that cause us to re-evaluate the relationship, our partner, and the costs of dissolving the relationship.

 * The social phase occurs when the couple decides to tell members of their social networks that a decision to end the relationship has been made. Sometimes the friends will mobilize to preserve the relationship. They may act as mediators. On the other hand, they may reinforce the decision to separate. Rumors that arise may cause further damage and hasten the end of the relationship.

 * In the grave-dressing phase, one or both partners may try to cover up the hurt and pain associated with the death of the relationship by creating a public story that they can share with others about what happened. This story can be positive or negative about the relationship and/or the other person.
