The mRNA that is initially transcribed contains regions that are not part of the protein that will be translated. These noncoding regions of mRNA ( introns) are removed from the mRNA by splicing. The mRNA then only contains the coding sequences ( exons) that can be released from the nucleus to be translated by the ribosome. Due to alternative splicing, the structure of the protein can be different which leads to isoforms of a protein.
