How did the Crusades begin?
 
  a. The Byzantines lost control of the Holy Land in 1071 and appealed for help from their fellow Christians in the West.
  b. At the Council of Clermont in France, Pope Urban II appealed for help to defend Eastern Christianity from the Turks.
  c. Dissatisfied with their lot in live, masses of peasants decided to seek a better life in the land where Christ lived dies and rose again.
  d. The Muslim laid siege to Constantinople and the western powers came to their fellow Christians' aid.
  e. Shortly after the final split between Catholics and the Orthodox, the Pope called for a holy war against the heretics.
