What explains the rather liberal divorce laws that California passed in the mid-nineteenth century?

  a. The new state legislature borrowed from Mexican law, which allowed women and men equal access to divorce.
  b. Because of the gender ratio in the state at that time, it benefited men to allow women to divorce because it created a larger pool of unmarried women.
  c. Women gained the right to vote in California in the 1860s, and they made sure that a more liberal divorce law was passed.
  d. California's divorce law was unusual at first, but other states quickly followed suit as women gained political strength during the second half of the nineteenth century.
