Nonverbal communication involves sending a message without using words, by means such as gestures, facial expressions, posture and gait, tone of voice, touch, eye contact, body position, and physical appearance. Nonverbal communication is largely unconscious and is viewed as the most honest expression of feelings. Because clients can be very sensitive to nonverbal messages, nurses must be aware of their own nonverbal messages. Clients also send nonverbal messages; nurses must be able to recognize these and clarify their meaning.
