Title: Explain the difference between an antigen and an epitope (antigenic determinant)
Post by: ran_rnb93 on Mar 24, 2014
Is there anyone who can help me on the activity questions on ex 12?

Activity 1

1. With these technique, is the antigen or antibody found on the patient sample? Explain how you know this.

2. Explain the difference between an antigen and an epitope (antigenic determinant)

3. When a sample has a small number of elementary bodies but not enough to be a positive result, there appears to have a been some nonspecific binding that was not removed by the washing steps. Which sample displayed this property.

The antigen is found on the patient sample. Since the test is a direct test, it detects antigen. The antigens detected are the elementary bodies.

2. Explain the difference between an antigen and an epitope (antigenic determinant)

The antigen is the entire foreign particle whereas the epitope is the specific binding site on the antigen that antibodies bind to. Antigens can have multiple epitopes with different structures.
