Title: What is the key difference between choanoflagellates and sponges?
Post by: Salmonella on Mar 29, 2014
What is the key difference between choanoflagellates and sponges?
a)Choanoflagellates are strictly aquatic.
b) Sponges are multicellular.
c) Sponges are asymmetrical and do not have tissues.
d) Choanoflagellates have distinctive flagellated cells that function in suspension feeding.

I think its A but im not sure.

I am certainly no Biologist; but I believe the best answer would be "D" because the apical flagellum surrounded by actin-filled microvilli is what characterizes Choanoflagellates.

Further explanation:
1.) I eliminated "C" as a possible answer because not all sponges are asymmetrical.
2.) I eliminated "A" as the best answer choice because Porifera (sponges) are also strictly aquatic.
3.) Lastly, I eliminated "B" because some Choanoflagellates, although unicellular, tend to form colonies (which makes them very similar to a multicellular animal.) Moreover, one of the types of cells in sponges, choanocytes, are morphologically very similar to the single-celled choanoflagellates.

Let me know if there's a better answer... good luck!
