This type of symbiotic bacteria are usually anaerobic, that means they do not need oxygen to grow. The metabolic process that they utilize is called dark fermentation, and photofermentation could also occur for anaerobic photosynthetic bacteria.

This strategy enhance the microbial community, and cost-effective in the efforts of degrading contaminants in wastewater.
