1. How do symbiotic bacteria use metabolic processes to produce biohydrogen from food waste?

This type of symbiotic bacteria are usually anaerobic, that means they do not need oxygen to grow. The metabolic process that they utilize is called dark fermentation, and photofermentation could also occur for anaerobic photosynthetic bacteria.

2. How are microbes used in the bioremediation of contaminated groundwater sites?

First of all, bioremediation literally means, to solve problems, such as contaminated soil or groundwater by the use of biological organisms. In a natural, nonpolluted environment, bacteria, fungi, protists and among other microorganisms constantly work at breaking down organic matter, hence they are called decomposers. Bioremediation works by providing these decomposers with fertilizer and oxygen, and other conditions that encourage their rapid growth. Some specialized microbes are added to the affected site to degrade this contaminants, which makes it an effective strategy to cleanup various pollutions.

3. Bioaugmentation has many uses, from transforming organic wastes into useful materials to soil decontamination. Explain how this process works and describe additional benefits.

Bioaugmentation is the practice of adding actively growing, specialized microbial strains into a microbe-rich community in an effort to enhance the ability of the community to respond to process fluctuations, or to degrade certain compounds, in result to improved treatment. This strategy enhance the microbial community, and cost-effective in the efforts of degrading contaminants in wastewater.

4. Why do animals pant after strenuous activity?

This mechanism helps animals to stay cool, or to regulate their inner body temperature, since they have fewer sweat glands as opposed to humans.
